Jamaican Peanut Porridge

Porridge is a big part of Jamaican culture. I don’t know if in other countries they drink as much porridge or place as much emphasis on porridge. (Please let me know in your comments.)   In Jamaica, porridge is a must have for babies and especially persons who are convalescent. There are as many types of porridges as you can imagine, however, the most popular are 1) Cornmeal Porridge 2) Plantain or Banana Porridge  3) Peanut Porridge  4) Hominy Corn Porridge 5) Oats porridge with Foska Oats being one of the most popular oats in Jamaica. Porridge is synonymous with good health. The porridge is easy to digest hence it is used as a great starter food for babies, especially cornmeal porridge. Now we are on the subject of Peanut porridge. This is a porridge mostly consumed by Ital Food lovers and is considered an aphrodisiac. How to Prepare Peanut Porridge Soak peanuts overnight. How To Prepare Jamaican Irish Moss

Image
How to  Prepare Irish Moss Irish Moss can be prepared in two ways. The traditional way is by soaking and then boiling. Many persons are however using Irish Moss Raw. So after soaking the sea moss they just blend it and consume it. However, I will speak to the Jamaican traditional method of preparing Irish Moss.   How to boil Irish Moss?  Irish Moss is pretty simple to prepare. Once you have purchased the moss from a reputable source, the next step is to soak it in some water (add a little lime juice) for about thirty minutes, some people soak it overnight. Boil the Irish moss and linseed in a pot until soft. Then mix it immediately. If you wait it will be too thick. You can add whatever you like: nutmeg, cinnamon, vanilla, milk, and sugar. Enjoy. Where to buy Irish Moss or Sea Moss?  Irish Moss can be purchased in the market, supermarket or sometimes depending on which community you live in someone may be selling it. (Remember I told you about the influx of different cultures well Irish Moss was brought to Jamaica by the Irish).  In my community a Rastaman rides past on his bicycle from time to time and sells fresh Irish Moss and Linseed. Personally, I prefer to prepare my own drink. However, it can be bought already prepared in a tin like this one that most people drink. Why So Many People Love Jamaica

Image
Yes, a lot of people enjoy visiting Jamaica? I wondered why and so this is my personal take on just one of the many reasons why Jamaica is so popular around the world. Well that is a story that needs to be told to be understood. The far reaching effects of Jamaican culture actually came about as a result of a catch 22 situation. The people who love Jamaican culture are actually the nexus of why Jamaica is so loved. Let us get back to the genesis of the story.  As the story goes Christopher Columbus was looking to find gold for the Crown of Spain. His ship got caught in the Trade Winds and he was marooned on the island of Jamaica. Well that signaled the demise of the Taino Indians who were living on the island as most of them succumbed to the illness that were brought by the Spanish.  See History of JamaicaWikipedia So anyway we are talking about the beginning of a relationship between the Spanish and Jamaica. Needless to say the Spanish brought their way of cooking: example e

Sorrel Drink

Image
